Danube Sturgeon Task Force 4th meeting

The Danube Sturgeon Task Force (DSTF) held its 4th meeting in Vienna on Februray 6th hosted by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences. Sturgeon experts from 7 several countries, representatives of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR), of national administrations, ICPDR (International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River), IAD (International Association for Danube Research), organisations dealing with eco-tourism in the region and WWF gathered to discuss next steps and pilot activities for sturgeon conservation in the wake of the DSTF`s “Sturgeon 2020” programme.

It was pointed out once more that there is urgent need for measures in the entire Danube River and the Black Sea Coast. Future projects should deal with monitoring the status of the last wild populations, identification and protection of sturgeon habitats, the reopening of the river continuum to allow undisturbed migration and successful reproduction, and the development of alternative income options for fishermen communities along the Lower Danube to mitigate overfishing.
